The 2017 Chatham Stakes is a Group 3 race that takes place at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne in late October or early November each year.

Run over a distance of 1,400 metres, the Chatham Stakes is open to horses of all ages. The Chatham Stakes is run under open handicap conditions and is worth more than $200,000 in prize money.

The Chatham Stakes was first run in 1986 when it was won by a horse called Avannotto. The race has been known as many different names throughout the years, including the Hong Kong Jockey Club Plate, the AAMI International and the Tab.com.au Stakes. The Chatham Stakes was named after Chatham, who won the prestigious Cox Plate twice during the 1930s.

The Chatham Stakes is held on Victoria Derby Day each year and shares its day with eight other Group races. These include the Group 1 Victoria Derby, Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes, Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, Group 1 Myer Classic, Group 2 Wakeful Stakes, Group 2 Salinger Stakes, Group 3 Lexus Stakes and Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes.

Horses that run in the Chatham Stakes have often come via races such as the Group 1 Toorak Handicap, while horses that perform well in the race are likely to run in upcoming races such as the Group 1 Emirates Stakes and the Group 3 Sandown Stakes. 2012 Chatham Stakes winner Fawkner went into the 2014 Cox Plate as favourite.

The Chatham Stakes/Emirates Stakes double is a fairly popular punt, with All Silent the last horse to take it out in 2008. Prior to that, it was Bezeal Bay in 1998.

Notable winners of the Chatham Stakes include Swiftsynd (1989), Scenic Park (2001, 2003), All Silent (2008), Poor Judge (2010) and Woorim (2011).
