The 2018 Champagne Stakes is a Group 1 race that is held at Randwick Racecourse in April of each year. Open to two-year-olds only, the ATC Champagne Stakes is worth a total of $500,000 in prize money and is raced over a distance of 1,600 metres. Run under set-weight conditions, the ATC Champagne Stakes requires colts and geldings to carry 56.5 kilograms, while fillies must carry 54.5 kilograms. The ATC Champagne Stakes is held on the final weekend of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, along with the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).
The first ATC Champagne Stakes was won by Yattendon in 1864. The ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, which is run at the same track two weeks prior, is often used as a suitable lead-up race to the Champagne Stakes. Horses such as Assertive Lad (2000), Viscount (2001) and Dance Hero (2004) have all claimed the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes double. The Champagne Stakes is also used by many as a form guide for who to watch as a three-year-old in the coming spring carnival, with 2008 winner Samantha Miss going on to place in the Group 1 Cox Plate and win the Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks.
Notable winners of this historic race include Chester (1877), Heroic (1924), Ajax (1937), Flight (1943), Todman (1957), Sky High (1960), Storm Queen (1966), Vain (1969), Baguette (1970), Luskin Star (1977), Triscay (1990), Intergaze (1996), Onemorenomore (2009) and Skilled (2010).
