The 2018 Carlyon Cup is an annual event hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club at their Caulfield circuit every February as part of the Melbourne Autumn racing carnival. It is a Group 3 rated contest raced over a mile under set weight conditions.
The Carlyon Cup is worth $150,000 to the first horses across the 1600m trek.
The Carlyon Cup takes a crucial spot during the carnival as it’s on the same card as the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes. It is one of six Group rated events on the day making it the second biggest program during the entire Melbourne autumn carnival.
From this event a horse could continue to any number of events with something like the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington in March a real stand out.
This race has a habit of attracting quite a number of talented gallopers and the winners list shows just how classy some of them have been.
Super Impose won this race back in 1989 will Star Struck got up in 1995.
Northerly was the champion in 2001 not to be outdone by Apache Cat in 2007.
More recently the race has been won by Righfully Yours in 2010 and Lord Pyrus in 2011.
