The 2019 Canterbury Stakes is a Group 1 race contested in March at Rosehill Racecourse during the Sydney autumn racing carnival.
It has a prize pool of $500,000 with the first horse across a trip of 1300m claiming the top prize. The Canterbury Stakes is also run under weight for age conditions making it a true test of ability. The 2013 running of the Canterbury Stakes was the first as a Group 1, with it previously being held as a Group 2 race.
In addition to the lion’s share of prize money the winner in this race also gains an exemption for the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes. The Canterbury Stakes is run at a crucial time during the carnival during the same program as the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic and the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes.
Given its position in the carnival there are a huge number of avenues a horse could take to get to this point. These include black type in Sydney or even races down in Melbourne including the Group 1 Futurity Stakes. From here it’s a similar story although given the ballot exemption the George Ryder is the obvious choice. That said no horse has managed to claim the Canterbury Stakes / George Ryder double since Quick Flick back in 1998.
There have been some really big names to pass through this race including the likes of Shogun Lodge in 2001, Defier in 2003 and Dance Hero in 2005. More recently the trend has continued with All Silent in 2009, Hot Danish in 2010 and More Joyous in 2011.
