The 2017 Brisbane Cup is a Group 2 race held every year in June at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane. The race is run over a trek of 2400m with prize money for the event totalling $300,000.
The Brisbane Cup is an open handicap and run on Stradbroke Day, the biggest day of horse racing on the Brisbane calendar. Along with the group 2 Brisbane Cup is the Group 1 Queensland Derby, Group 1 JJ Atkins and Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.
It was first run in 1871 and was held on the Queen’s Birthday holiday Monday until 2009 when the event was switched to Stradbroke Day to bolster the already strong race card.
The Brisbane Cup was originally run over the traditional two mile cup distance (3200m) but in 2007 the distance was reduced to 2400m and so to the Group 1 rating.
Queensland’s best stayers always turn out for the event as well as some quality interstate competition.
The Group 1 Doomben Cup and Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes are good form guides going into the race with recent winner Scenic Shot (2009) claiming the Doomben Cup / Brisbane Cup double.
One of the best ever horses to win the Brisbane Cup was 2008 champion Viewed which went on to win the Melbourne Cup the same year.
Other notable winners include Melbourne Cup runner-up Yippyio in 2000 and Desert Chill which won in 1995 and 1997.
