The 2018 Breeders Classic is a Group 2 event run annually in February at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse. During the autumn racing carnival. It is a mares only event which has set weight conditions and $175,000 in prize money on offer.
The Breeders Classic is a 1200m event which really sets apart the best mares form those at a lower standard. The race is hosted on the same card which features the Group 2 Light fingers Stakes, the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes and the Group 3 Royal Sovereign Stakes.
The set weight conditions of the Breeders Classic mean that there is no hiding from pure speed or ability around the Randwick track. Excluding a massive amount of bad luck the best horse will always win, meaning it’s a favourite with punters.
One thing which does make things a bit tougher is the fact some horses may be first up in the Breeders Classic and as a result their fitness may not be 100 percent.
The top echelon of Australian mares have passed through this event over the years and some nice names are printed on the winners list.
Miss Helterskelter won this race in 2003 followed by Private Steer in 2004 and Winning Belle in 2005.
Hot Danish joined the ranks in 2009 and the 2011 champion was More Joyous for Gai Waterhouse.
