The 2017 BRC Chairman’s Handicap is a Group 3 race contested each May during the Brisbane winter carnival. It is held at Doomben Racecourse where horses are separated based on quality handicap conditions.
The event is run over a journey of 2000m and carries a purse of $125,000.
It is raced on the same card as the Group 1 BTC Cup and the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate, one of the biggest days of the carnival.
Being a middle distance handicap the quality of talent in the race can vary from year to year.
While usually dominated by Queensland horses, in recent years a larger presence of interstate runners has been seen.
Following the natural flow of races over the carnival the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast can sometimes provide a rough form guide.
From here a race like the Group 3 Premier’s Cup is a likely target at the same level of class.
Previous winners of the BRC Chairman’s Handicap include Society Beau in 2002, So Assertive in 2004 and Art Success in 2006.
Recent champions to add their name to the list are Crossthestart in 2010 and Humma in 2011.
