The 2019 Blue Diamond Prelude for Fillies is a Group 2 contest held annually at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. The event is run every February alongside an identical race for colts and geldings.
It is a two-year-olds only race and is the lead up to one of the most anticipated events of the Melbourne Autumn carnival. The Group 1 Blue Diamond stakes is Melbourne’s premiere two-year-old contest making the Blue Diamond Prelude a highly important event.
The runners are pushed across a 1100m trek in the pursuit of not only the $125,000 prize but also momentum leading into the Group 1 later in the carnival.
They race with set weight meaning this is a true test to find the best two year old the country has to offer.
As juveniles the girls can sometimes have a pretty tough time of it coming out of this race and then lining up against the boys.
It’s not impossible though as Alinghi showed back in 2005 when she won the fillies Blue Diamond Prelude and then went on to win the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Horses coming into this race are likely to have also run in race one of the series, the Blue Diamond Preview.
It’s an identical assignment for fillies accept over 100m less.
There have been a string of good horses to come through the Blue Diamond Prelude with this race increasing stud value drastically.
Rose Of Danehill won this race in 1997 with Brief Embrace the winner in 2002.
Alinghi was one of the best ever with her 2004 win and Psychologist set a blistering pace with her 2010 triumph.
