The 2015 BJ McLachlan Plate is a race only recently upgraded to Group 3 status which is usually run at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane.
The event used to be a Listed race but was bumped up to Group 3 status in 2011. In 2015, it was held at the Gold Coast Racecourse.
The BJ McLachlan Plate is an open event for 2-year-old sprinters raced over a trip of 1200m. It forms part of Brisbane’s mini summer series and is the final Group race of the calendar year.
The BJ McLachlan Plate is run on the New Year’s Eve meeting and concludes the summer series of black type racing in Brisbane.
The main races leading up to it are the Listed Phelan Ready Plate (1200m) for colts and geldings, as well as the Listed Calaway Gal Plate (1200m) for fillies. Both events are named after some of Queensland’s best ever juveniles.
Being only recently bumped up in standing it’s likely a new level of horse will begin to contest the race and trainers have further incentive to bring their horses back for a short summer campaign.
It would also be a great race to use for horses being targeted at the Magic Million Carnival on the Gold Coast in mid January.

The BJ McLachlan Plate field is usually comprised of some very classy two year olds. Because it runs in late December, most of the young horses in the BJ McLachlan Plate field have had quite a bit of preparation, with few going into the race as maidens.

2015 BJ McLachlan Plate Nominations
The BJ McLachlan Plate nominations are usually released around a week prior to the race itself. As a two year old feature that is growing in popularity, the BJ McLachlan Plate nominations draw horses from a wide variety of sources. Many of the runners come from Queensland, while some particularly talented two year olds from elsewhere might choose to enter the BJ McLachlan Plate nominations.
