The 2019 Ajax Stakes is a Group 2 race that takes place at Rosehill Racecourse in late March each year.
Run over a distance of 1,500 metres, the Ajax Stakes is run as part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The Ajax Stakes is run under quality handicap conditions and is worth $175,000 in prize money. The race is named after champion horse Ajax, who won the Cox Plate in 1938.
The Ajax Stakes was first run in 1985 when it was won by a horse called Royal Troubador. The race was originally run as a Group 3 race, however, was upgraded to Group 2 status in 2006.
The Ajax Stakes is held on Rosehill Guineas Day in Sydney and shares its day with the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas, Group 2 Magic Night Stakes, Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes and Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes.
Notable winners of the Ajax Stakes include Catalan Opening (1996-1997), Confiscate (1998-1999), Grand Armee (2003), All Silent (2008) and Cat’s Pyjamas (2011).
