Swan Hill Racecourse continues to go from strength to strength as a premier facility for country racing in Victoria.
In fact racing in Swan Hill is so well received that millions of dollars have been invested to add a harness track to the facility so racegoers have access to even more horse racing action.
In terms of thoroughbred racing though the Swan Hill Jockey Club puts on around 10 meetings a year.
That’s not bad for a circuit that’s well and truly distant from the city of Melbourne (approx 355km), in fact Swan Hill sits more than twice as far away as the city as Bendigo and is still more than an hour’s drive Echuca.
That doesn’t diminish from the quality of racing though, especially during the hugely popular Swan Hill June Racing Carnival.
They market the carnival as the premier country carnival in the state and maybe even the entire country.
Few could argue with them either with a mountain of effort put in by the club for the three day meeting held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
The first feature race is the Golden Topaz Stakes worth $70,000 on the Friday with the main event Swan Hill Cup worth $85,000 on the Sunday.
The course itself has ample room and provides for close and clean racing with long runs to the turn and a wide 25m home straight.
Swan Hill Racecourse has regular starts from as short as 800m through to the top end at 2100m.
