Punch On Ready For Magic Millions Challenge

Gold Coast trainer Peter Balzen has high hopes for Punch On in the Magic Millions 3YO Stakes next Saturday.

The three-year-old filly shot into contention for the $1 million race after winning the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben last Saturday.

Punch On won the race ahead of Noisy Ocean and Lucky Morna.

The Tiger Hill filly was purchased for just $16,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale and has now won close to $200,000 in prize money and won two of her 11 race starts.

“We bought her because she’s a half-sister to Punch Up,” Balzen said.

Punch Up, who is also trained by Balzen, is a seven-year-old that has won six of his 40 race starts.

The Sunday Knight gelding has won close to $170,000 for Balzen and was a bargain $10,000 buy from the 2006 Magic Millions Sale.

Both Punch Up and Punch On are by the same mare; School Blue.

“We don’t worry too much about the size, it’s more about the mares when we’re buying horses,” the trainer said of Punch On’s deceivingly delicate frame.

“(Connections) Tom Ware and Jeff Grover have been with us for 30 years… so anyone that’s been with you that long you love to see them get a good horse.”

Balzen is unperturbed over the threat of a heavy track for next Saturday’s race, pointing out the time the filly ran third in the $250,000 Sky Racing QTIS 600 2YO Plate on a Heavy 10.

“It was the heaviest track we’ve ever seen…and that was the least of her worries,” he said,

“She was very green.”

Punch On will be looking to win over 1,400 metres for the first time in the Magic Millions 3YO Stakes after previously saluting over both 1,200 metres and 1,350 metres.
