Peron Included in 29 Nominated for Tatt’s Tiara

As expected classy filly Peron has been entered to back up in this weekend’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) after her dominant stakes debut in the Gai Waterhouse Classic on Saturday.

The three-year-old took her career record to six wins from seven starts when easily putting her rivals away at Ipswich and is now charged with the task of delivering back-to-back Tatt’s Tiara titles for trainer John Thompson.

Thompson won the race with Pear Tart last year and said after Saturday’s win that he sends a better horse to this year’s edition of the $500,000 race.

“We won it last year with a three-year-old filly and this filly is a better filly than her,” Thompson said.

While the Tatt’s Tiara has always been the goal, it hasn’t been the perfect preparation for Peron. Thompson was forced to run the filly on Saturday in order to improve her hopes of qualifying after she missed out on making the field in preferred lead-up events.

A quality group of horses have been nominated for the fillies and mares’ feature including Chris Waller’s consistent mare Red Tracer.

The five-year-old may not have won a Group 1 but she is a model of consistency, having won 11 times from 28 starts and collected more than $1.2 million in prizemoney. The Dane Shadow mare will start among the favourites after scoring a tough win in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes on June 8.

Out to go one better this year will be last year’s runner-up Skyerush who will chase a third straight win after claiming consecutive Group successes at Sydney’s autumn carnival.

Other notable Tatt’s Tiara entrants include multiple Group 1 winners Streama and Yosei, Gai Waterhouse Classic third Doubtfilly, last year’s third placegetter Gai’s Choice and Gai Waterhouse Classic minor placgetter Doubtfilly.
