The Chris Waller trained Performer stole the show to win the Listed $150,000 Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick today.
Performer was last to leave the barriers but winning jockey Hugh Bowman shook up the Exceed And Excel colt to take up a midfield position in the middle stages of the race.
The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Invincible Lad began quickly from an outside gate to set the pace and led the field into the straight.
Bowman waited until Performer ($5) balanced up in the straight and brought him with a late run to beat Bondi ($4.60) by three quarters of a length with Santos ($18) running on for third.
Bowman said that he had a good feel about the prospects of Performer going into today’s first two year old race of the new season and expects him to shape up as a Golden Slipper prospect in the 2018 Sydney Autumn Carnival.
“This horse gave me a really good feel in the trial. He is a real early two year type by Exceed And Excel so he has got pedigree to go early,” Bowman said.
“I was quite confident coming into today, he didn’t let me down, He is a very nice two year old.”
“I think he will improve a bit form the experience but I wouldn’t imagine that Chris would push him too far.”
“I would say that he would be a horse that will be aimed at the Golden Slipper. He is a very nice colt.”
The James Cummings trained Hiemal was sent out as the $3.70 favourite and after taking up a forward position faded in the straight to finish sixth.
