The stage is set for the Group 1 $1.5 million Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 (1200m) this Saturday at Doomben, the official kickoff to the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival‘s elite-level action.

A capacity field of top sprinters is assembled, with the Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass narrowly leading the betting as he aims to recapture his winning form.

Overpass, a dual champion of the lucrative The Quokka in Perth, is currently the $4 favourite at Ladbrokes with Joshua Parr booked to ride from barrier 10.

The six-year-old son of Vancouver is looking to bounce back after finishing fifth in the latest edition of The Quokka, where he was only 1.6 lengths behind the winner despite being the top fancy.

Prior to that, he showcased his class with an excellent second-place finish behind Briasa in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes during The Championships in Sydney.

Now third-up and fit, Overpass returns to Brisbane for the first time since his runner-up finish to Giga Kick in the 2023 Doomben 10,000.

History favours him, with favourites having a strong record in this race, including Giga Kick’s win at $1.65 in 2023.

Despite drawing a wide barrier 14, Sunshine In Paris prepared by Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibaold holds the second line of betting.

The talented five-year-old Invader mare, to be ridden by champion jockey James McDonald, is priced at $4.50.

Her last outing saw her finish third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 19.

She comes into this event fresh as she drops back to the 1200m sprint distance.

A winner of the Group 1 Champions Sprint at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Sunshine In Paris has not raced in Brisbane since December 2022, but she commands significant respect from punters.

Rounding out the single-figure contenders are Schwarz ($5) from the John O’Shea & Tom Charlton stable and Benedetta ($7) trained by Jason Warren.

The four-year-old Zoustar entire Schwarz is in peak form, having won two of his past three starts, including a last-start victory in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at The Valley on March 22.

The form from that race looks strong, with the third-placed horse, Jimmysstar, subsequently winning the Group 1 All Aged Stakes.

Schwarz has since had two winning trials in Sydney and boasts versatility across all track conditions.

Benedetta, a Hellbent mare, is aiming for her first win since her triumph in last year’s The Goodwood in Adelaide.

She finished second to Schwarz in the William Reid Stakes and then ran a credible fifth in the All Aged Stakes as a 25/1 outsider, beaten by only two and a half lengths.

The five-year-old mare returns to her preferred 1200m distance (a distance where she has recorded four wins from nine starts) for her debut run at Doomben.

Among the longer-priced contenders, Libertad ($34), the surprise winner of the Group 2 Victory Stakes at Eagle Farm last start, could again offer value.

Mazu ($15), trained by Joe Pride, also warrants attention after returning to his best form with a win in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick last time out.

The capacity field and intriguing form lines promise a captivating edition of the Doomben 10,000 this Saturday.
