Beaten favourite Outback Barbie gets her chance to make amends and secure a start in the 2020 Stradbroke Handicap when she lines up in the $250,000 The Gateway (1400m) at Eagle Farm on December 14.

Outback Barbie was sent out as the equal favourite with stablemate I’m A Rippa for last Saturday’s Group 3 $200,000 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben and jockey Jim Byrne said a wide barrier was the difference between winning and being a beaten a nose.

Byrne ended up in an awkward position from barrier twelve in the fifteen horse George Moore Stakes but said that Outback Barbie put up a brave effort to charge home for a nose second to the Desleigh Forster trained Chapter And Verse.

“Monsieur Gustave just kept dragging me back and it wasn’t where I wanted to be,” Byrne said.

“The barrier has made the difference, but gee she’s brave. She was under the pump at the 700m but just kept coming.

“She will be suited over a bit further when she gets across the road (Eagle Farm) next time.”

The Gateway is a new race for the four year olds on the Queensland Summer Carnival Program and the winner is exempt from the ballot for the Group 1 $1.5m Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June next year.

Outback Barbie has shown plenty of ability since her two year old days and the Tony Gollan trained mare kicked off this preparation with a first up win in the Listed $125,000 Keith Noud Quality (1200m) at Doomben on November 9.
