Trainer Mike Moroney has set the Cockram Stakes and a possible clash with some of the biggest names in racing as the next start for consistent filly Octavia after her strong win in the Daniel McMillan Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Octavia was originally nominated for the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) but Moroney made the decision to contest the easier fillies and mares handicap race earlier in the day after Octavia was only allocated 54kg.

The decision paid off handsomely for Moroney, with Octavia leading the race from start to finish to record a very comfortable three and a half lengths win from Draw Forward and Means A Lot.

Octavia was given an given an excellent ride by young apprentice jockey Kayla Nisbet who piloted the filly to the lead without using much energy in the early stages of the race.

The win was the rising four-year-olds first of this campaign, after finishing a narrow second in her past two starts, and has Moroney confident that the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor can make the step up to Group level racing in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 17.

Undefeated glamour mare Atlantic Jewel and her three-quarters sister Commanding Jewel are both expected to make their return to the races in the Set-Weights mares race but Moroney believes Octavia can be competitive.

“It will be a tough race, but she’s a specialist at this trip and track,” Moroney told TVN after Octavia’s win.

Ocatvia’s past performances indicate that she enjoys the Caulfield circuit, having recorded two wins and three placings from her five starts at the home of the Melbourne Racing Club, while she has scored three wins and two second place finishes at 1200 metres.
