Homebred two-year-old Sweet Little Lies lived up to race track hype when thrashing her rivals in the Thomas North Plate (1100m) at Caulfield today.

The debutante by Exclusive Quality and Borobodur was strongly supported to start $2.80 favourite on the strength of the spruiking escaping from the Flemington yard of co-trainers Matt Ellerton and Simon Zahra.

The filly was mighty impressive though her opposition included five unraced and two raced gallopers.

Of the raced Dispatch had won at Sandown Hillside and Alzora placed at Flemington.

They were easily taken care of after Sweet Little Lies who jumped slowly, mustered speed to lead and powered away in the final stages to win by four and three quarter lengths under a hold without feeling the whip.

Bred by owner Brian Agnew, Sweet Little Lies hasn’t been nominated for any major two-year-old event but is likely to head towards the Group 1 $1m Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 25 via a late entry fee.

“She hasn’t been clean away but once she hits the ground she is off and gone,” Ellerton said.

“It was nice to see her translate what she does at home today.

“Today is the quickest we have asked her to go, she hadn’t been let go and we were always wondering and it is a relief.

“We will see how she pulls up and might have a go on Australia day in the (Blue Diamond) Preview and push in that direction.

“She has time on her side and she looks as if she will furnish into a nice three-year-old, she will tell us.”

Ellerton and Zahra had great success with the now defunct 2010 Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily following a Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper path.

Jockey Chris Symons won the early races on Crystal Lily but was dumped prior to the Golden Slipper when defeated in the Blue
Diamond.

Symons was aboard Sweet Little Lies.

“I’ve been on a few nice two-year-olds but the hard part is staying on them,” Symons joked.

“She went terrific, it is the first time I’ve been on her back and there was a big wrap on her.

“She jumped really well and was running quick sectionals down the side but I couldn’t hold her any slower to be honest.

“Around the bend I let her slide a bit more to get her comfortable in her action.

“And for her to quicken at the top of the straight and lengthen like she did, obviously she has a big heart.

“Mentally you would love to see her come back and take a sit.

“You don’t see them lead all the way in a Blue Diamond.

“At the moment she is brilliant and you use that in these earlier races.

“But when she learns to switch off, she will end up a really nice horse.”
