Premiership winning jockey Chris Munce will have to wait another day to break Mick Dittman‘s riding record after today’s Eagle Farm meeting was abandoned after consistent overnight rain.

The seven race program was called off after an eight o’clock inspection due to the state of the track and persistent rain which saw twenty-six millimetres fall in the last twenty-four hours.

Munce is on ninety-seven metropolitan wins and was poised to shoot past Dittman’s thirty-two year record of ninety-seven and a half wins for the season with a good book of rides today but will have to wait until the Caloundra Cup meeting at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

The top jockey is keen to break the record but has set himself the goal of riding one hundred winners for the season, a feat he is going to achieve with four weeks to go until the end of the racing season.

“There’s no risk in the world it would be a great achievement, but I’m aiming for the one hundred,” Munce said.

“It’s just one step at a time at the moment. Hopefully I can get the record pretty soon and also get to the one hundred.”

“Overall the season I’ve had has been pretty good. I can’t complain.”

Munce said the pressure has been mounting as he inches closer to his target and he will be relieved when the final winners arrive.

‘It’s probably not pressure, it’s more being anxious,” Munce said.

”I just want it over and done with.

”It’s been a long season and if I can get to the hundred I’d be keen to take a bit of a break.”

”I’ve had something like 790 rides it’s been a long season. So I just want to knock these last three over.”

Munce has a good book of rides at the Sunshine Coast and will team up again with trainer Kelso Wood in the Listed $175,000 Reed Property Group Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on Eye Liner Stakes winner Belltone and last start winner Grey Assignment in the 1600m Benchmark 90 Handicap.

He has also picked up the ride on noted wet tracker, the locally trained Winmara in the Listed $200,000 Signwave Caloundra Cup (2400m) as well as the Todd Austin trained Playtime in the Listed $100,000 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

With the abandonment of today’s Eagle Farm meeting and further rain expected, acceptances for Saturday’s Sunshine Coast meeting have been put back until tomorrow at nine o’clock.

The Sunshine Coast track is currently rated a heavy 9 and is expected to be reassessed to a heavy 10 with further rain predicted leading up to the week end.

Melbourne’s jockey premiership battle is back on at Caulfield today with Luke Nolen striving to regain the lead on his return from Black Caviar duties in England.

Craig Newitt snuck to a one win lead while he was out of the country but Nolen is determined to retain the title.

Nolen has a full book of eight rides at Caulfield today and with the backing of the strong Peter Moody stable looks set to regain the lead over Newitt who has ended up with six mounts.
