Chris Munce had a major scare in Brisbane yesterday when he almost hit the deck rounding the home turn.
Munce was aboard a horse on debut and needed every bit of his skill to remain in the saddle when it shifted violently.
“He was a first starter and he was very wayward and green during the run, approaching the 500m mark he ducked out about five horses,” he said.
“I stayed on but in doing that I gave me back a bit of a twinge,” he said.
This sent alarm bells ringing as Munce has a promising book of rides for the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast this Saturday.
This includes Sizzling in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic and the good news is he’ll be fit to take hi place.
“I went straight to the physio and I feel better this morning,” he said.
“I probably could have pushed on(in Brisbane) but I erred on the side of caution.”
As for Saturday Munce isn’t being quite as bullish as some others going into the Magic Millions Classic but he knows his horse is certainly up to the job.
He says Sizzling has hampered by bad luck at his last two and from a better alley on Saturday things will be different.
“He went as well as what he could have done under the circumstances and I think he’s racing really well,” he said.
The big field and vocal crowd also aren’t expected to worry him in any way.
“Pressures not going to worry that horse, he’s pretty laid back and casual, it won’t worry him one bit,” he said.
” He’ll probably parade the best of all of them.”
His gate speed remains a lingering concern but the plan will be to try and stick with the pack midfield before being unleashed on the turn.
“I like to think if he can hold a competitive spot he can be there right in the finish,” he said.
He’ll certainly be tested early on with a host of horses likely to battle for the lead forcing a hot tempo.
“It’ll be interesting to see what Fundido does, he won by racing forward and racing competitively,” Munce said.
“It’s a big pressure race no matter what way you look at it and there’s going to be good speed.”
Munce has a ride in eight of the nine events on the 2012 Magic Millions card.
