Moody Joins The Exclusive Victorian Century Club

Peter Moody

Peter Moody has become the third Victorian trainer to train 100 city winners in a season

Peter Moody became only the third Victorian trainer to train 100 city winners in a season after he scored a double at Flemington last Saturday.

Moody achieved the elusive century of winners after both Testifiable and Tereschenko saluted at the track.

The two horses are both sired by Testa Rossa, who is coincidently one of Moody’s favourite.

“Two of my first best horses Testifiable and Tereschenko were by Testa Rossa and I suppose I’ve had a soft spot for him since,” Moody said.

“They’re good bread and butter horses, they win winter and summer and they don’t cost a lot.”

The trainer said it was “extremely gratifying” to join Lee Freedman (115, 2005-2006) and David Hayes (103, 2006-07) in the exclusive 100 club.

“To be mentioned in the same breath as D A Hayes and D L Freedman is beyond my wildest dreams,” Moody said.

“What can I say, it’s been a tremendous season.”

Moody said that he was extremely pleased with the stable’s season strike rate of 20.36 per cent in Melbourne during the season.

“Probably one of the most pleasing things about the season is our strike rate,” Moody said.

”I’ve probably had more runners than a lot of the stables but they (winners) are coming at the right rate and that’s been very satisfying.”

The trainer has not forgotten the owners, as well as his stable team’s role in his latest success.

“Loyalty is undersold in this industry, it’s a big part of my stable,” he said.

“I’ve got a great team around me.”

“My business is about return to owners.

“It’s like a mechanic, if they do a good job you’ll go back.

“A lot of my owners were with me eight years ago when I trained 150 winners in a season, but a lot were in the country.

“We’ve just upgraded the cattle.”

While Moody has been dominant in Victorian racing, he has only ever had two Melbourne Cup runners, two Caulfield Cup runners and one Cox Plate runner.

The trainer’s best result was fourth.

”I’d love to win one of those big races but I’m not going off to Europe to buy stayers and bring them back for that purpose,” he said.

”If one falls into my lap, then so be it … I just haven’t had the cattle to run in the cups, and I’m not into running horses for the sake of it.”

Moody is just hoping for a city win from each of his horses next season.

“We’ve got 76 boxes and if we can get a (city) winner from every one I’ll be happy,” he said.
