McEvoy Confident Set Square Has Right Caulfield Cup Form

Kerrin McEvoy has been extremely pleased with the 2015 Caulfield Cup lead-up form of Set Square and he is delighted with the talented mare ahead of the Group 1 event at Caulfield on Saturday.

Set Square was set for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup at the start of her 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with good efforts in the Cape Grim Beef Plate (1400m) at Caulfield on August 29 and the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) at Flemington on September 12 before she stamped herself as a genuine Caulfield Cup contender with a tough third in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.

McEvoy was thrilled with the performance of Set Square in the Turnbull Stakes and he is confident that the Crown Oaks winner will relish the step-up to 2400 metres in the 2015 Caulfield Cup this weekend.

“She ran well the other day in the Turnbull,” McEvoy said.

Ciaron (Maher) was more than pleased with how she ran there over the 3000 and she drops to 51, which is a nice weight to have.

“If she gets out earlier she gives Preferment something to chase and she wasn’t beaten far.

“It points well to her getting there in good form come Saturday.

“It is fair to say that a mile and a half suits her better and there are a few pluses heading into the race.

“This morning she worked in tandem with Lucia Valentina; early in the work I just saw behind and then we joined up and finished the last 500 in good style.

“She won over 2500 at Flemington last spring and she can stay the trip, so it just looks like it is going to suit in what is a great renewal in this year’s Cup.”

The 2015 Caulfield Cup field was released this morning and McEvoy admits that there is plenty of talent spread right across the 18 confirmed runners and four emergencies.

McEvoy believes that the likes of Fame Game, Hokko Brave and Snow Sky will prove tough to beat, but he is still hopeful that Set Square can deliver him his first Caulfield Cup win since he took out the 2008 edition of the race with All The Good.

“You have the Japanese and Snow Sky is an interesting runner,” McEvoy said.

“It is going to be a great race and the excitement is building already.”

Set Square is currently available at 2015 Caulfield Cup odds of $9 with Ladbrokes and he is on the fourth line of betting behind Mongolian Khan ($4.80), Fame Game ($8.50) and Hauraki ($8.50).
