May’s Dream will return to the races in the 2014 How Now Stakes, but trainer Darren Weir does not rate the talented mare as a winning chance in the Group 3 event at Caulfield on Saturday.

May’s Dream performed well at the highest level of racing during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and finished second in both the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 16 and the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 2 before she failed to fire in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at the same venue on November 7.

The New Approach mare was sent to Adelaide during the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival and she suffered a surprise defeat in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) before she scored a maiden win at Group 1 level in the Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on April 26.

Weir said that May’s Dream took great benefit out of her stint in the spelling paddock and is happy with the condition of the four-year-old, but told Racing Ahead that he believes that the 1200 metres of the How Now Stakes will be too short for the daughter of Melbourne Cup runner-up She’s Archie.

“She is in great order and she is ready to kick-off for the longer races down the track,” Weir said.

“She trialed well at Ballarat ten days ago and she is going to present there in good order.

“She can (run well fresh), but I would suspect that it will be too short.

“As long as she is hitting the line strong.”

Weir opted not to include May’s Dream in the entries for races like the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), despite her staying pedigree, and he revealed that the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) would be the major 2014 Spring Racing Carnival target for the Group 1 winner.

“Probably the Myer I think and that is where we are heading,” Weir said when asked where May’s Dream would head during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

“We are going to keep her to the mile this preparation and that is the race that we have picked out.”

May’s Dream is currently available at the lengthy 2014 How Now Stakes odds of $31, while returning sprinter Samaready is a clear favourite to take out the Group 3 event.
