Luck has abandoned Artistry again in the barrier draw for Saturday’s Group 1 $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Club Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm.
The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Artistry was given barrier twelve in the sixteen horse Tatt’s Tiara field and continued the run of wide barriers she has had to contend with throughout her current campaign.
“She has had no luck with barriers this preparation,” Peter Snowden told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
Artistry was able to overcome barrier eight in a frield of ten when she won the Group 3 $125,000 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1350m) at Rosehill on March 19 but was then hit with barrier eleven out of fifteen when eighth to Azkadellia in the Group 1 $1m The Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Queen Of The Turf Stakes) (1600m) at Randwick on April 9.
Then at her next start the Shamardal mare jumped from gate ten when fifth to Nancy in the Group 3 $175,000 Godolphin Crown (1300m) at Hawkesbury on April 30 and at her next run was wide for most of the way from barrier eleven when fifth to Danish Twist in the Group 3 $200,000 Godolphin Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone on May 14.
But Artistry was back in the prizemoney after drawing a single figure barrier in seven when second to Tatt’s Tiara rival Cradle Me in the Group 2 $200,000 Bundaberg Rum Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.
“Her Dane Ripper run was good and her Scone run before that was enormous and she was five wide throughout that day and got beat less than two lengths,” Snowden said.
Snowden is hoping a gear change will help overcome her wide barrier in the Tattersall’s Club Tiara and the four year old mare will race in winkers for the first time.
“I’m going to add winkers to her gear on Saturday and she has a bit of a look at other horses and she has been doing it for a while,” Snowden said.
“The other day in the Dane Ripper she was held up for a little while and when she was inside horses she was a bit reluctant to let go but once she got to the outside she found a fair bit quickly.
“I’m just hoping a set of winkers will help her focus no matter where she is in the field.
“She has been working well in them and I have been going to put them on for a while.”
Kerrin McEvoy has ridden Artistry in her latest two outings and gets the mount again and the highly rated jockey is searching for another Brisbane Winter Carnival Group 1 victory after winning the $650,000 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) on Our Ivanhowe and the $750,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1350m) on Music Magnate.
