With two former Melbourne Cup winners and an in-form Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite in the field, it is only natural that some horses will fly under the radar in the build-up to the Caulfield Cup (2400m).

That is especially true for a number of international contenders who are yet to race on Australian soil.

One of those is Jakkalberry.

Owned by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock and trained by Marco Botti at Newmarket, the six-year-old has been without the fanfare of a number of his rivals heading into Saturday’s $2.5 million staying test.

But he’s not without the credentials to make him a serious contender, having proven himself a competitive stayer around the world.

The Irish-bred former Italian is an adept traveller, having raced in Italy, Hong Kong, Dubai, the UK and the US with his most recent start a dominant win in the American St Leger at Arlington in August.

He’s won at Group 1 level in Italy over the Caulfield Cup distance and finished third in the Dubai Sheema Classic in March behind high profile horses Cirrus Des Aigles and St Nicholas Abbey.

Travelling foreman Alex Cairns said on Botti’s website the son of Storming Home came through the long trip to Australia unscathed and is in good order for his first-up test on Saturday.

“Jakkalberry took the long flight very well,” Cairns said.

“He has been bouncing since he came over here. He has galloped well on the training track and the journey has looked to take nothing out of him.”

Multiple Group 1 winning Irish jockey Colm O’Donoghue rode Jakkalberry in his Americain St Leger win and he has travelled to Australia to assume the mount this weekend.
