Newmarket Handicap winner Hay List will miss the remainder of the Autumn Carnival after undergoing surgery for a bout of colic on Thursday.
The injury plagued sprinter was set to tackle the Group 1 $1m T J Smith (1200m) at Randwick on April 14 but will be out indefinitely after suffering his second bout of colic in twelve months.
Trainer John McNair had to cut short last year’s Brisbane Winter Carnival after Hay List sustained a leg injury which required extended treatment and more recently he was under an injury cloud with a hoof problem leading up to the Group 1 $400,000 Power Tracker William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 23 in which he ran second to the three year old Foxwedge.
The six year old emerged from the shadow of super mare Black Caviar after four Group 1 seconds to her to take this year’s Group 1 $1m Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10 under the impost of 58.5kgs.
Jockey Glyn Schofield partnered Hay List in a gallop at Gosford on Wednesday and report to McNair that the sprinter hadn’t worked in his usual manner.
The Brisbane Winter Carnival is now looking extremely doubtful and a Spring Carnival appearance will depend on Hay List’s rate of recovery.
