Hot Danish may have reached the end of her racing career after she was treated for a large deep seated leg abscess on Monday.
The Randwick Equine Veterinary Centre discovered Hot Danish’s abscess on Sunday afternoon and an operation was immediately scheduled for the next day.
“We took her to the Randwick Equine Vet Centre at about 5.00pm on Sunday and they operated on her on Monday and she had an abscess which they have drained,” said Hot Danish’s trainer Les Bridges.
“It is just one of those things.”
Les Bridges is in no hurry to bring his champion mare home, believing she has the best chance of recovery at the equine centre.
“She could be there for another week because with a mare like that you cannot takes the slightest chance and she is on heavy antibiotics,” Bridges said.
While the trainer is hopeful that his prize-winning mare will make it back to the race track, he is realistic about the time that would be involved.
“I saw her this morning and she is a 100% better now, quite comfortable now and she is out of the pain,” Bridges said.
“She is progressing pretty well now but she will have to go out for a good spell after it as she has had a lot of antibiotics and drugs.”
Hot Danish had been aimed at some of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s best sprint events, including this Saturday’s Canterbury Stakes, which will feature super mare More Joyous.
“The tragedy was that I thought she had improved out of sight after those first two runs and we were going to run her on Saturday in the Canterbury Stakes and then the All-Aged Stakes and take her up to Brisbane again, but we cannot do that now,” Bridges said.
“It could well be that she has finished racing, she was flying but that’s horse racing.”
Hot Danish has had a lucrative career that has seen her win 16 of her 31 career starts and earn almost $2.3 million in prize money.
