Holland Breaks Back In Sandown Fall

Melbourne jockey Dean Holland has received horrible news after a fall at Sandown’s Betfair Park on Wednesday.

Holland fell from his ride Count La Za, trained by David Hayes, as he came into the home turn and was rushed to Epworth Hospital by ambulance officers.

Scans have later revealed he has suffered back fractures to the vertebrae in his lower back.

Doctors have identified two separate fractures but luckily have only classed both as relatively minor.

Holland stayed in hospital overnight to be monitored but will not require surgery, the only treatment available is plenty of rest to allow the body to naturally heal itself.

Other jockeys in the race including Lisa Cropp, Stephen Baster and Darren Gauci all gave evidence to an inquiry into the incident but the process has been halted until Holland is fit and strong enough to give evidence personally.
