A decision on where to run Startsmeup this weekend has not been made

His ideal race is the Tramway Handicap at Randwick this Saturday but whether it be that or the Chelmsford Stakes Bruce Hill isn’t really concerned.

His horse Startsmeup ran brilliantly from a wide gate last start in the Warwick Stakes and Hill just wants him back on track towards his Epsom Handicap tilt.

He currently sits 21st in the order of entry for the Tramway so is relying on horses not accepting to run there, however he is guaranteed a spot in the Chelmsford field.

Ironically the Chelmsford is actually rated higher, a Group 2 compared to the Tramway’s Group 3 but is over 1600m as opposed to 1400m.

“It doesn’t really matter,” Hill said.

“I would probably prefer the 1400m if I had a real choice, but I think it’s neither here nor there, because it was a pretty solid race the other day on a wet track, it was probably more like a mile.

“Not that they’re easy to win, but the Chelmsford isn’t as strong as I thought it would be.

“If the weather stays the way it is he will run super in whichever race he runs. I just want to see him get the chance on top of the ground in a good race.”

Startsmeup took up a forward position in his last run and battled gamely to the line behind the fast finishing Pinwheel, only beaten a nose by Ilovethiscity for second spot.

“He ran super, it was just a shame it was wet,” Hill said.

“One day we will get in a big race where we get a dry track and a good alley. If he steps up to it, we will definitely be going towards the Epsom.”

There is plenty of talent nominated for the Chelmsford however it’s questionable on how well they will be firing on the day.

Plenty will be first up and others may find the mile a little too short as they look for the 2000m plus races later in the spring.

In the Tramway it’s a similar story however some of them have already been back for at least one run.

A horse that will be making his first start of the new season though is the Stephen Farley trained Sincero.

The Stradbroke Handicap champion and last season sensation will return with a 58kg weight in the race and will be ridden by Chris O’Brien.

Sincero’s performance tomorrow will indicate to connections whether they remain in Sydney for the Epsom or if they push south for the Underwood Stakes.
