Heaven’s Riches Posts Upset Win In Chairman’s Stakes

Heaven’s Riches has produced an exceptional run to win the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at Morphettville today.

The Danerich colt produced the upset of the day by winning the race as a $110 chance in the betting.

Heaven’s Riches edged out Alcohol, who has to be content with second, to win the race on the line, while race favourite Cornell finished in third.

Trainer Robbie Laing had four representatives in the Chairman’s Stakes and was thrilled to have claimed the win with one of them.

“I gave three of them away (during the race) and I thought ‘where’s Heaven’s Riches’ and I looked to the outside and he was going very well,” Laing said.

Laing revealed that he originally did not have a high opinion of Heaven’s Riches after running him in sprint races as a two-year-old.

The colt finished ninth of nine runners in his first start at Sandown on November 27, 2010.

“I ran him in a couple of short races early up and I thought he’s bloody useless this thing,” he said.

The trainer now realises the three-year-old’s potential and will keep him in Adelaide for the Listed Port Adelaide Cup over 2,500 metres on May 12, 2012.

“He sits back and he charges home,” Laing said.

“He’ll stay here for the port Adelaide Cup.”

Jockey Michael Walker guided Heaven’s Riches to today’s Chairman’s Stakes win.

“Good on Robbie (Laing). He had four horses in the race,” Walker said.

“Luckily enough I was given the job to do it on this horse.

“He could have gone another lap. He’ll stay all day.”

Heaven’s Riches has now won two of his 12 race starts and has earned more than $90,000 in prize money.
