Heathcote wraps up rollercoaster day with Excellantes’ win

Trainer Robert Heathcote wrapped up a rollercoaster day in winning style when Excellantes took out the last race on Doomben 10,000 day.

Heathcote didn’t have to wait long to get over the disappointment of Buffering’s second to Sea Siren in the Group 1 $650,000 Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 (1350m) with Excellantes leading all of the way to take out the Listed $80,000 Cathay Pacific Chief De Beers (1110m).

Top New Zealand jockey James McDonald took Excellantes straight to the lead and proved too strong for Seek And Find and Rocker in the run to the line.

Excellantes was the second winner for the day for Heathcote, having taken out the Ambassador Travel QTIS three year old Handicap (1200m) earlier in the day with Volkhere.

“That’s a black type race and we’re delighted,”  Heathcote said.

“It’s been a rollercoaster day, two wins and Buffs great run so we’re delighted.”

“He’s always been a good horse . We were just hopeful to get him back on a dry track. I told James to go out, I don’t mind if you lead, he’s the best horse in this race and he showed it.”

Excellantes started at $2.60 making it back to back Doomben wins, proving too strong for Seek And Find ($6) and Rocker ($6.50).

Heathcote will study the future race programs and find a suitable race for the four year old in the next couple of weeks.
