A sensational ride by Craig Williams has seen Green Moon score a one length victory in the Group 2 $200,000 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington today.

Jockey Williams held the Irish five-year-old back superbly before exploding down the straight and passing eventual runner up Pied A Terre with 100 metres to go.

Pied A Terre shot to the lead early in the race and battled bravely to lead almost the whole way before getting run down by the Robert Hickmott trained horse.

Green Moon owner Nick Williams was full of praise for both horse and jockey alike after the race.

“He’s a very good horse this horse, we’ve bought a few from overseas,” he said.

“We were hoping that he’d have a bit of zing in his legs and he certainly did.

“As usual Craig gave him a super ride, he was patient. I was a bit worried when he was stuck on the fence…but that horse is a real bulldog and he made sure he pushed straight through.”

The $11.00 winner is set to be spelled until Spring and Williams believes he is the “real deal.”

“He’s off to the paddock now, that will do him for the Autumn and we’ll get him ready for the Spring,” he said.

“A son of Montjeu, he’s a Group 2 winner over a mile.

“We might see if we can get him in to the Cox Plate.”

The Michael Moroney trained Wall Street got off to a good start and ran well to finish third.

Pre-race favourite Speediness had some issues coming out of the gate and could not quite recover, eventually finishing in fourth place.
