Good Standing has produced an impressive all-round performance to comfortably win the Listed Queensland Day Stakes (1350m) at Doomben Racecourse this afternoon.
Good Standing began the Queensland Day Stakes as a tied $5 favourite amongst a particularly open field of three-year-olds and the horse did his chances of justifying the trend no harm when jumping well and taking an ideal position on the heels of early leaders I’m A Rippa and Hall Of Fame.
Settling into a good rhythm and experiencing a reasonably carefree run across the back straight, jockey Damien Browne upped the tempo aboard the Artie Schiller colt and took up the pace as the field rounded onto the final straight.
Kicking clear with 200m left to run, Good Standing only continued to extend to the line before eventually finishing off the race three lengths ahead of a brave Sylpheed, while I’m A Rippa managed to continue to punch away in the dying stages of the race to finish third.
Godolphin fancy Morton’s Fork was undoubtedly the unluckiest runner in the fourteen-horse field and was caught behind a wall of runners as he was beginning to work into the race.
In taking out the Queensland Day Stakes, Good Standing has added a fourth career win to a record which also boasts two minors, through a total of twelve appearances.
Good Standing’s best performance undoubtedly came in last year’s Group 3 Ladbrokes Classic (2000m), in which he charged clear late to post a comfortable win, and he will undoubtedly improve upon stepping up in distance this time in.
Sylpheed was understandably unable to make much of her run against Winx in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on March 18th and she returned to the Gold Coast for sixth in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) last weekend.
I’m A Rippa has shown plenty of ability during his time with leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan and the gelding justified the decision to be tested amongst black type company this afternoon.
