With Kristy Banks facing an uncertain future in a wheelchair as a paraplegic after suffering horrific spinal injuries in a race fall on December 31, fundraisers have begun in her honour.

The Gold Cost Turf Club donated a pair of Jayco riding pants and racing silks which were subsequently signed by all the jockeys in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and 3YO Guineas last Saturday.

Liam Birchley Stables racing manager, Glen Prentice, was one of the people behind the fundraiser.

“Chris Munce was behind it a lot and to see what we could do for Kristy,” Prentice said.

“We got all the riders from the two and three year olds to sign (the silks).”

The silks and riding pants were then auctioned off before the first lot at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales.

“We managed to take it over to the Magic Millions,” Prentice said.

“They auctioned it off before the first horse sale on Saturday night.”

Whilst Prentice expected the item to sell for a few thousand dollars, he was shocked and delighted to find they went for an extraordinary $26,000.

The winning bid was made by Coolmore Australia’s Tom Magnier.

“The bidding was pretty active and Mr Tom Magnier ended up with the winning bid and he ended up paying $26,000,” Prentice said.

Jockeys Tommy Berry and Paul Hammersley also donated their whips from their winning rides in the day’s two major races, which themselves went for $3,200.

Prentice said  he did not know who purchased the whips, which were signed by their respective jockeys.

“I’m not 100% sure; they didn’t have their names at the time,” he said.

The $29,000 in funds will go directly to the Kristy Banks appeal, which has been set up in order to help the jockey pay for medical bills.
