Racing‘s living legend Bart Cummings unveiled another VRC Oaks prospect when Gliding won the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfieldtoday.
The old firm of Cummings and Darren Beadman teamed up with the latter giving a perfect ride to the daughter of Flying Spur and Marrego.
Both men believe Gliding will stay the 2500m of the VRC Oaks on November 6.
Gliding will now run in the traditional Oaks lead up, the Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day, before the Oaks five days later.
Cummings has won the VRC Oaks on nine occasions with Light Fingers (1964), Sanderae (1970), Leica Star (1974), Taj Eclipse (1983), Tristanagh (1989), Weekend Delight (1990), Richfield Lady (1991), Magical Miss (2001) and Faint Perfume (2009).
Beadman settle Gliding in fourth and one off the fence while Baptism’s rider Glyn Schofield adopted stop and start tactics in front.
Slowing the pace midfield, he kicked the filly before the turn but at the 400m Gliding looked the winner when joining in under a hold.
Dowager Queen, the $3 race favourite, was buried back in the field with jockey Craig Williams finding no way out.
That filly lost no admirers when she finished strongly but too late when second beaten one and half lengths lengths with Gioe a further half a length third.
Goie effort being workmanlike while Craig Newitt’s mount Vittoria ran on well from the tail to gain fourth.
“She finished off well today and went well” Cummings said.
When asked if Gliding could run the Oaks trip Cummings said “Marrego threw Eremein who won the mile and a half BMW at Rosehill, so the pedigree says she could.”
