Glass Harmonium will be a genuine chance in the Makybe Diva Stakes after impressing during the winter

After four impressive runs in Queensland during the Brisbane winter carnival there’s no doubt people realise Glass Harmonium is a genuine player in tomorrow’s Makybe Diva Stakes.

His forward running nature and striking grey colouring has made him a hard horse to miss, especially given that in four Australian Group races to date he’s recorded three placings and a win in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup.

In an ominous warning from trainer Mike Moroney though, people should be prepared to see an even better horse this spring.

Moroney said his preparation before getting to Brisbane was far from ideal and now that he’s had a full spelling period with the horse he’ll be able to show his best form.

The six year old entire was originally brought across from Sir Michael Stoute in England.

Whilst there he had two runs including a sixth in the Group One Champion Stakes after completely missing the jump.

From there he travelled to Sha Tin for a luckless 12th placed finish behind Snow Fairy in the Hong Kong Cup, but that’s where things started to go wrong.

“He hadn’t had all of his shots and he had to be flown back to England to do his quarantine during one of their worst winters which really put us on the back foot,” Moroney said.

“He came out of quarantine in Sydney in the middle of February and we took him up to Queensland and I thought he did a great job considering all the travelling he’d done.

“He’s more settled in now and we’ve got more of a handle on him. He runs in the Makybe Diva on Saturday and I’m really happy with the way the horse is going.

“He’s one of a bunch of a few stayers that are in the race but he’s a bit sharper than the other ones so I expect him to run well.”

Moroney has eight horses nominated for the Melbourne Cup but rates Glass Harmonium as his best chance of scoring the prize.

We’ll get a good gauge of that potential tomorrow when he runs in the Makybe Diva Stakes given he comes up against current Caulfield Cup favourite Lights Of Heaven.

Lights Of Heaven is shooting to become only the third mare in the last two decades to win the Makybe Diva Stakes after Saleous won it in 1996 and Mannerism was declared the winner in 1993.
