Fortune simply too quick in Bat Out Of Hell

Local galloper Carry To Fortune defied the widest barrier to score a shock win in the $100,000 Bat Out Of Hell Hcp (900m) at the Gold Coast today .

The Sandra O’Sullivan-trained mare drifted from $14 to start $21 yet won like an odds-on favourite when simply having too much speed for rivals.

The mare had her first run in 13 weeks and added to her good first-up record.

She has now won three of five first-up races and scored her sixth win in 23 starts.

The win gave O’Sullivan, who trains just three horses,  her biggest thrill in the sport.

“That’s easily the biggest win I’ve ever had,” she said.

“She’s such a brilliant mare when she’s fresh and that was no surprise at all.

“She never looked like getting beaten and I’m absolutely thrilled.”

Jockey Glen Colless jumped the five-year-old quickly from barrier 12 to share the lead with race favourite Trusted Partner who held the fence.

At the home turn Carry To Fortune, still under a hold, took over the running with Trusted Partner under immediate pressure.

Carry To Fortune opened up a four length lead at the 100m mark and the race was never in donbt.

Seek And Find ran on strongly from the tail to gain second after being dragged back early from a wide gate by jockey Jason Taylor.

It was clearly the best run outside the winner with Reilly Blue coming from midfield to gain third.

An excuse can be made for Mondean who was caught wide without cover throughout the event.

While Leapfrog was never in it and All That faded from the turn after it settled behind the leaders.

Inventory couldn’t go the early speed from barrier one and will be better suited over longer trips.

Carry To Fortune is yet to win beyond 1030m but took her earnings to $160,000.

O’Sullivan has trained at the Gold Coast for 20 years but hadn’t won a race since June.

She took over the training of Carry To Fortune at its second preparation in late 2009.

The win brought up a double for Colless who won earlier in the day aboard the promising Rocker.
