In quite a big change, English import Warringah will forgo his flat racing career to be trained as a jumps horse.

Under the guidance of Robbie Laing Warringah will have a trial this Wednesday at Cranbourne over 2800m.

He will be ridden by Steve Pateman, one of the country’s leading jumps jockeys who simply said, “he jumps well”.

The six-year-old began racing for Sir Michael Stoute in England before being sent over as a Melbourne Cup hopeful.

He was the leader in 2009 but quickly dropped out of contention to finish last to Shocking.

Chris Waller who has had so much success with European imports failed to get the best out of the horse during two Sydney seasons and enjoyed only mediocre results.

He also spent some time on the Gold Coast for Bruce Hill who did earn a win on Melbourne Cup Day, however it was in an unlisted 2400m event at Eagle Farm.

Laing has nominated Warringah for a start in the $200,000 Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes over 3200m as well as the Banjo Paterson Series with heat 1 kicking off over 200m at Flemington on Saturday.

He’s not the only horse Laing has picked up from Queensland with Sermon rejoining the stable after a successful period winning a 2200m race at Eagle Farm earlier in the year.

Sermon won Laing the 2009 Cranbourne Cup and will also embark on a jumps career with a 2400m trial this Wednesday.

Now seven-years-old the horse is nominated for this Saturday’s Henry Bolte Handicap over 1700m at Flemington.

It’s a good looking roster for Laing this weekend with four-year-old Count Lotus in the Andrew Ramsden and two-year-old Scelto in the Listed Gibson Carmichael Stakes.
