The nine-year-old was set to continue his spring campaign this weekend but connections broke the news that his outstanding career has come to an end.

“Efficient has been retired after suffering a leg injury this morning,” Nick Williams, son of owner Lloyd Williams, said on twitter.

“Efficient will be retired to a 5 star paddock at our farm. He will have a very enjoyable retirement with his old mate Zipping.”

The grey gelding had a stellar career in which he won seven times from 29 starts and collected more than $4.7 million in prizemoney.

A son of Zabeel, Efficient’s major highlight was winning the 2007 Melbourne Cup but he also claimed Group 1 victories in the 2006 Victoria Derby and the 2009 Turnbull Stakes.

His sparkling career began in August 2006 and other highlights included winning the Moonee Valley Vase (2006) and finishing second in the Sydney Cup as an eight-year-old in April.
