Ratings expert Paul Daily has Set Square on top of his 2015 Caulfield Cup tips and he believes that the talented mare represents great value in betting for the Group 1 event that will be held at Caulfield on Saturday.
Set Square has not recorded a race win since she outstayed her rivals in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last year, but she has performed well in all three starts this preparation and was only narrowly denied by Preferment and Royal Descent in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.
Daily believes that Set Square can still improve on her Turnbull Stakes effort and he believes that she be equal favourite with Mongolian Khan at 2015 Caulfield Cup odds of $6.
“She looks good value at this point in time,” Daily told RSN.
“There is obviously an issue with the barrier, but she probably comes in a bit with a few of those emergencies.
“The Turnbull run was certainly ok and she can run better than she did in that run too, so based on that she is a definite chance in this race and we have her as equal favourite at $6 as top selection.”
Another Oaks winner that has been included in the 2015 Caulfield Cup field is Set Square and Daily believes that the four-year-old is another horse that appeals at their current price in Caulfield Cup betting markets.
Daily believes that the Turnbull Stakes performance of Gust Of Wind was better than it looks on paper and he feels that the daughter of Darci Brahma is capable taking a step-up in quality in the Caulfield Cup.
“Gust Of Wind is a definite value horse in this race,” Daily said.
“Its best rating this preparation came last start in the Turnbull and her win in the Australian Oaks was very good numbers.
“I think that the market has probably underestimated her a bit here and we have her at $10.”
Team Freedman-trained Our Ivanhowe has snuck under the radar heading into the Caulfield Cup, but he has not been missed by Daily after he finished second behind Let’s Make Adeal in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington on October.
Our Ivanhowe is currently available at Caulfield Cup odds of $26, but Daily thinks the German import should be half that price and is a genuine winning chance in the Group 1 event this weekend.
“Our Ivanhowe rated quite well in his two Australian runs and third-up it gets its chance,” Daily said.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes this race out, it could be a blow-out horse at longer odds and he is closer to a $13 chance.”
Mongolian Khan is currently available at 2015 Caulfield Cup odds of $4.20 with Ladbrokes and he is a clear favourite from Hauraki ($8.50), Set Square ($9), Fame Game ($10), Snow Sky ($11) and Rising Romance ($11).
