A professional if not spectacular performance by first starter Don’t Blink pleased connections when winning the Australian Turf Club (2YO,1100m) at Canterbury today.
The well-related daughter of Redoute’s Choice – Snip Snip came into the event after two easy trial wins that impressed track watchers.
Punters unloaded on Don’t Blink, who started odds on, despite the heavy 10 track rating.
Jockey Christian Reith sent the filly to the lead and set a quick speed ahead of Diamond Start.
Rounding the turn, she shook off Diamond Start who came again in the final 200m.
While Diamond Start never looked like winning she did enough for Reith to push Don’t Blink to the line.
“It is a big challenge coming here on a extremely wet track,” trainer John ‘Shea said.
“She is very professional, she bangs out, puts herself there and travels well.
“She was probably entitled knocked up a bit at the end.
“She is quite willing and can put herself in a good position, that will be handy for her later on.
O’Shea was pleased with the ride by Reith.
“If they are entitled to be $1.60 they may as well be ridden accordingly,” he said.
“We didn’t want to over complicate things and she was ridden lovely.
”She’ll have a short let-up and a race like the Widden Stakes in the autumn is on the cards.”
Don’t Blink is a sister to Group 3 2006 VRC Maribyrnong Plate winner Husson Lightning.
