Dialed In Favourite For World’s Most Famous Race

As expected Dialed In is the early favourite for the 2011 Kentucky Derby ahead of the previous top pick Uncle Mo.

Uncle Mo was destined to being one of the shortest priced favourites in races history before an unexpected third last start and now revelations he’s being treated for an infection.

Dialed In is trained by dual Derby winner Nick Zito and got plenty of luck with barrier eight in the draw.

It’s a good gate to get with ten winners jumping from that position including 2009 upset winner Mine That Bird.

Things got worse for Uncle Mo though, trapped out in gate 18 of the 20 horse field.

He may not even get a start in the race unless he makes a rapid recovery from a gastrointestinal illness.

He managed to jog 1600m around the track yesterday and also paced the grounds and stood in the starting gate, however that’s a long way from running in America’s biggest horse race.

His owner Mike Repole does have one other runner, the 20 to 1 hope Stay Thirsty which ironically was purchased off Nick Zito as a yearling.

Both horses are trained by Todd Pletcher who is looking for back to back Kentucky Derby wins after his triumph with Super Saver last year.

Nehro is the third favourite in the race with every other runner well into double figure odds.

In the end it was Archarcharch, winner of the Arkansas Derby, which drew barrier one.

It’s probably the least fancied of all the gates after last years favourite Lookin At Lucky was trapped on the fence almost the entire trip before finishing sixth.

Amazingly it was also the final gate drawn for this year’s Kentucky Derby with  connections anxiously trying to avoid it in the tense closing stages of the draw.

Still, Archarcharch remains equal fourth on betting markets alongside Midnight Interlude.

Mike Maker is the only other trainer with two runners in the 137th Kentucky Derby, he’ll saddle up long shots Twinspired and Derby Kitten.
