Danny O’Brien feels that his Blue Diamond hopes will either be confirmed or rejected as soon as this Thursday in the Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield.

The trainer has exciting colt Cambiaso entered in the race and says that despite the improvement he’ll gain over the next month if he doesn’t perform this week the Group 1 is as good as gone.

“He’s going into the Diamond Preview like most of them with good improvement in him, but if he can’t win that with the improvement towards the Diamond, then he won’t be able to win the Diamond,” O’Brien said.

“If he’s going to win the Diamond, then he needs to be able to win the Preview.”

Cambiaso first came to prominence back in October when he won the Maribyrnong Trial at Flemington over 1000m.

The jump in distance isn’t expected to be an issue though as he’s worked over 1200m comfortably for the last few weeks.

“You can’t do any more than he’s done. He’s had one start for a win and now we’ll find out a lot more about him in the Preview.”

While Cambiaso is certainly on track for the Blue Diamond on the fillies side of things the plans for fellow debut winner Sweet Little Lies remain up in the air.

She will run in the fillies Preview on Thursday but isn’t yet nominated for the main event.

However connections will be very tempted to pay the $55,000 late entry fee if she can add another win to the nearly five length domination she secured on debut.

“We’ll evaluate what we do next after the Preview. In the back of our mind is that she’s going to be a nice three-year-old,” Co-trainer Simon Zahra said.
