Queensland jockey Corey Gilby has been killed in a freak accident following a meeting in the northern part of the state on Saturday.

Gilby was riding at Julia Creek, a non-tab meet in a small town to the east of Mount Isa and Cloncurry.

Gilby successfully completed all five races on the program including a close second place in the penultimate event.

It was after the card was over though that the 25 year old took part in a two horse trial where the incident occurred.

Leg bandages came loose on his horse tripping it up as it past the post hurling Gilby to the ground.

He was rushed to Townsville Hospital but succumbed to his injuries with his life support switched off by family yesterday.

Gilby was a well travelled rider who completed his apprenticeship under Jay Morris in Mount Isa back in 2008.

His resume included wins as far south as Melbourne all the way up to Darwin before returning to Morris in Mount Isa earlier this year.

He only recently transferred to Kerry Krogh at Julia Creek with Morris saying he was sad to see him go and devastated he’s now gone for good.

“I am still in a bit of shock. We went through some ups and downs but we never stopped being friends,” he said.

“Corey rode my first official winner. He was a talented rider who thrived on confidence.”

Racing Queensland has extended sympathy and best wishes on behalf of the racing industry to Gilby’s family and loved ones.
