After being the star of the show on Derby Day at Flemington last Saturday, all-conquering Sydney trainer Chris Waller was back in the winner’s at Flemington again today on Melbourne Cup day.
Grand Marshall won the $100,000 Visit Victoria Plate (2800m) with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jim Cassidy aboard and started the day off in great style for the Waller stable.
Waller collected two Group 1 trophies last Saturday with Brazen Beau taking out the Group 1 $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) with Preferment.
Waller will saddle three runners in Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), Junoob, Opinion and Who Shot Thebarman, and is confident that all his three runners will go to the barriers in peak condition following good solid preparations.
“It’s a big day today, we are not expecting too much but we have three chances, they are all sound and well and they certainly deserve to be there,” Waller told Racing Ahead.
“They have all had good preps and hopefully they can go one further today.”
“It’s the race we all aim for so there is no stepping back now, we have to push on and hopefully they can run that strong two miles, that’s what it is all about.”
