Charm’s Honour breaks black-type maiden

Lightly raced filly Charm’s Honour signified a bright future when collecting her first black-type win in the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) at Doomben today.

Charm’s Honour provided Scone trainer Greg Bennett with his first winner in Brisbane and stallion Strada its first black-type winner.

The three-year-old did it the hard way after being posted three wide at the back of the field for  the majority of the race.

Jockey Ric McMahon initially pushed forward but was happy to drop back when a quick tempo was set by Saraji.

While in the second half of the field, McMahon was still ahead of perceived main danger  Lucky Morna who followed behind.

McMahon faced a wall of horses at the 400m but gained a split as Crazy Mamma who settled up close drifted on the turn.

That piece of luck was all that was needed as Charm’s Honour moved into second place at the 250m mark.

Saraji, like in the past, was found wanting over 1200m.

It was left to Punch On, who had settled inside of Charm’s Honour early and was held up at the turn, to make a race of it.

The Peter Balzen-trained galloper gained a length and a half in the final 300m but couldn’t overhaul Charm’s Honour with Saraji third.

Lucky Morna had to change course in the straight and her run was creditable without ever threatening.

Bennett, a former horse breaker, previously raced a horse in Brisbane in 2005 named Donna Uccello who failed at Eagle Farm.

“I’m 52 now and I’ve given horse breaking away and I’m really enjoying training,” he said.

“This is Strada’s first stakes-winner and I think this mare is good enough for the autumn in Sydney.

“I’m not saying she’s a Group 1 horse but she’s definitely up to Group 2 and Group 3 races.

“Before this she had been Listed-placed but now she’s a Listed winner.”

The win was Charm’s Honour’s fourth in eight starts and she boosted her prizemoney to $127,750.
