Carlton House upstaged several of his stablemates to win the opening barrier trial over 1400 metres at Royal Randwick this morning.

Carlton House looked a much improved horse from his first barrier trial appearance a fortnight ago and found the line well to score a two length victory from Fiorente and Glencadam Gold.

Just like  his impressive barrier trial victory a fortnight, Fiorente was ridden at the tail of the field before being bought to the outside to challenge for the lead in the final stages but was unable to catch Carlton House who flashed home after receiving a timely split with 100 metres left to run.

Melbourne Cup aspirant Glencadam Gold found the line well but was handily beaten by both Fiorente and Carlton House.

Michelangelo, who is yet to make his racing debut in Australia, was ridden much closer to the pace and challenged for the lead with 300 metres left to run but faded in the concluding stages and finished at the tail of the field.

Carlton House, owned by Her Majesty The Queen, was a proven Group 1 performer in Europe who finished second behind ten time Group 1 winner So You Think in the 2012 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2011m).

After finishing sixth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) last December, he joined the stable of Gai Waterhouse and made his Australian racing debut when finishing thirteenth behind Havana Rey in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill in March.

The son of Street Cry has impressed since returning from a break in the spelling paddock and has been set for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
