Trainer Danny O’Brien believes that talented gelding Bullpit will give the rest of the field something to catch when he contests the 2014 Darley National Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday.
Bullpit made his racing debut with a disappointing seventh in the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m) at Flemington on March 1 and he scored his maiden win in the Friends Of Epworth Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley on March 29.
The Speed ‘N’ Power gelding finished fourth behind Pressing in the Mindy Green Plate (1200m) at Caulfield on April 12, in what has turned out to be a very strong form race, and he scored his maiden black type win in the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on April 26.
O’Brien told Racing Ahead that he has been happy with the form that Bullpit has shown since making his racing debut and is confident that the two-year-old is an excellent chance of scoring a Group 3 victory in the Darley National Stakes this weekend.
“He is a real tradesman and he has obviously been a tough little two-year-old lining up for his fifth start,” O’Brien said.
“He won a stakes race very comfortably there in Adelaide two weeks ago and I see no reason not to send him back there for the Group 3 this Saturday.
“He carried the 59 that day (in the Mindy Green Plate) and obviously the winner, the horse of Mick Price’s, has come out and won very comfortably again.
“It is hard to find much fault with any of his runs and I can’t find any fault with the horse since his win last start.
“We are hoping that he can win another stakes race as a two-year-old.”
Bullpit led from start to finish when he scored a comfortable victory in the Queen Adelaide Stakes at the end of April and O’Brien does not think that the juvenile will have any problems crossing over to the lead in the Darley National Stakes this weekend.
“He is brilliant over the first furlong and a half of his races and his sets them up like that; he is quick from the gate and has a high cruising speed,” O’Brien said.
“They all have to catch him and I can’t see anything going with him there on Saturday.
“Hopefully he will give them something to catch.”
Bullpit ($2.20) is currently a clear favourite in 2014 Darley National Stakes betting markets from debutant Moonovermanhattan ($6), Sweet and Speedy ($6) and Tender ($9).
