James Cummings’ champion Too Darn Hot colt Broadsiding etched his name in the Golden Rose Stakes history books with a first-up thriller defeating the fellow Godolphin-raced Traffic Warden in the million-dollar Rosehill feature on Saturday.
Last season’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes – J.J. Atkins interstate double winner became the first three-year-old to take out the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) first-up showing exactly what he was made of fresh.
“He’s a champion from last season, he steps right onto the turf as a three-year-old and claims a Group 1,” Cummings told the media after claiming his 50th career Group 1 as a trainer.
“It’s a pretty impressive achievement for a colt to do. I can’t remember too many colts, champion two-year-old colts, doing that in the past.”
After presenting well in the yard, Broadsiding was given a masterful ride from the inside alley by James McDonald whose success saw him take his Group 1 tally up to 99 victories in the saddle.
J Mac and the hot $2.15 favourite stalked the leaders settled off the speed on the inside rail before finding a gap in the straight to move out and launch a powerful closing run.
Broadsiding presented at the top of the straight, hit the lead inside the 100m and fought it out stride-for-stride with Traffic Warden who had the fitness edge following the Street Boss colt’s first-up Group 2 Run to the Rose victory.
The punters were cheering and celebrated a sensational victory with Broadsiding savaging the line to salute by a head bob.
Mayfair claimed a surprise third for the Waterhouse/Bott stable who also ran fourth with the front running Storm Boy.
This victory positions Broadsiding as a clear contender for future races this spring carnival.
He is now the $2 favourite for the upcoming Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and is into $6 through race sponsor Ladbrokes for the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) on October 26.
