The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival heats up this Saturday with Stradbroke Handicap Day featuring the elite-level Group 1 $1 million Ladbrokes JJ Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds.

The talented James Cummings-trained colt Broadsiding is set to be the odds-on favourite in JJ Atkins betting as he chases his fourth consecutive win.

Broadsiding, a Godolphin-raced son of Too Darn Hot, has been in top form, winning his last three starts and accumulating over $1.34 million in prize money across just six career runs.

He recently conquered a challenging Heavy (10) track at Randwick to win the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) before proving his versatility with a victory at Eagle Farm on June 1st.

There, he dominated the Group 2 BRC Sires’ (1400m) on Slow going, showcasing his potential for another win over a similar distance in the JJ Atkins field.

His winning performances and impressive record are reflected in the short odds, with race sponsor Ladbrokes currently offering $1.90 for him to take home the win.

While Broadsiding is the clear favourite, the race isn’t without potential challengers.

Amelius, the Annabel Neasham-trained Hellbent filly, and Imperialist, the Chris Waller-trained Churchill colt, are both considered dangers at $9 each in the latest JJ Atkins betting markets online.

Both horses finished a close second in The Phoenix last weekend at the track and are back for another shot at glory.

Amelius will have jockey Tyler Schiller aboard, while Imperialist is yet to confirm a jockey.

Waller has a strong history in the JJ Atkins, having won it three times previously.

This year, along with Imperialist, he will also field Mr Artemisia, son of his 2018 champion The Autumn Sun.

Other horses to watch include recent Group 2 Champagne Classic winner Bittercreek, the BRC Sires’ runner-up who will be ridden by jockey Mark Zahra Zouna, and Annabel Neasham’s Bosustow, coming off a dominant win at Doomben.

The clash between Broadsiding’s dominance and the chasing pack promises an exciting race.

The quick turnaround from last weekend’s races and jockey assignments for some contenders will add another layer of intrigue to the JJ Atkins 2024.
